One day · San Francisco → Hopland → Dancing Crow Vineyards → San Francisco
You know Napa. You know Sonoma. Now discover a quieter side of Northern California.
Leave the city behind for a day and ride north to Hopland, in Mendocino County, where open vineyards and small-town wine culture replace the crowds and traffic of the better-known valleys. Someone else does the driving. Drinks are on board, and the tasting, with finger food and an optional in-house brunch, is at one of Mendocino’s most distinctive wineries.
One day. One beautiful ride north. A very different California.
Because here you get the whole story of one wine in one place: the estate vines, the cellar where it’s made, and the courtyard where you taste it, under a 150-year-old olive tree. No crowds, no tasting-room conveyor belt, and wine you won’t find on a supermarket shelf. More on the wine below.
Here is how a typical Saturday unfolds. Times are approximate and shift a little with traffic.
Shared van: meet us at San Francisco City Hall, on the Van Ness side, in time for a 10:30 departure.
Private sedan, SUV or van: your chauffeur picks you up at your door, at a time we set together when you book.
Settle in for the two-hour ride up Highway 101, with complimentary drinks on board. You’re welcome to bring your own snacks and food.
Just north of the little wine town of Hopland, in Mendocino County. Your guided tasting begins, with wines that reflect Mendocino and Lake Counties, including distinctive old-vine selections. Finger food is waiting at the tasting room, and if you added the winery brunch when you booked, it’s served here, made in-house.
No rush. Settle into the courtyard under the 150-year-old olive tree, walk out among the vines, take photos, pick up a few bottles to bring home, or simply enjoy the quiet.
On the way out, a stop in Hopland for coffee and a browse for souvenirs, crystals and gems.
Relax, nap or swap tasting notes on the ride home. The shared van drops off back at City Hall; private rides take you to your door, in time for dinner.
To help you plan your trip, we have put together a list of what's included and what's not included in your tour package. This will give you a clear understanding of what to expect and help you make any necessary arrangements before your journey begins.
A Napa day usually means several tasting rooms, several counters, and pours from brands you’ll forget by dinner. Many of those wines are made somewhere else entirely. At Dancing Crow, you meet the people who make the wine, and you stand next to the barrel your glass came from. The second hour on the road is part of the day, not lost to it.
Most wine on a supermarket shelf is built to a target: a predictable taste, a big ripe hit, a long shelf life, the same bottle year after year no matter where it was grown.
Dancing Crow starts at the other end, with the grape. Their winemaking is low-intervention, what many people now call “natural” wine: grow healthy fruit, pick it at the right moment, and let fermentation do its work, without pushing the wine toward a flavor it didn’t come with. You can taste the difference.
Picked early, for freshness. Grapes are harvested before they turn overripe and jammy, so the wines are bright and lower in alcohol, around 12.5 to 13%.
Time, not tricks. The Farmer’s Cuvée Sauvignon Blanc rests 14 months on its lees, partly in a 900-gallon French oak foudre. That is where its depth comes from.
Nothing smoothed over. The Sauvignon Blanc skips the step many wineries use to soften acidity, so it stays crisp, mineral and alive.
A vintage tastes like its year. These wines aren’t blended to taste identical every year. Each one carries its season.
The style is French-inspired: a quieter, more delicate alternative to the big, bold wines Napa is known for.
Dancing Crow’s home vineyard sits at about 1,400 feet on the western shore of Clear Lake, on some of the most volcanic soil in the United States. Volcanic ground gives wine a mineral, stony edge that can’t be faked in a cellar.
Both of the family’s vineyards, Dancing Crow and the historic Old Stake vineyard, are certified sustainable by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance, with independent checks on how they care for the soil, the water and the land around the vines. Old Stake’s vines were planted over a century ago, with mixed varieties growing side by side as they did in 1901.
Dancing Crow is family-owned. Tony Cartlidge has made wine since 1980; he and his wife Sarah Forni started Dancing Crow with their family in 2014 and opened their own winery in Hopland in 2023, where winemaker Scott Kirkpatrick leads the cellar.
You don’t need to be a wine expert. You just need to enjoy good wine, a beautiful place, and the pleasure of tasting something real.
